Coast to Coral (Sunshine Coast) - Making Waves: Citizen Scientists and SEQ Reefs
Come and join Reef Check Australia and friends at Underwater World Sealife - Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Australia for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments. Each month we have a new, interesting and engaging speaker.
This month we'll hear from Jodi Salmond, Community Engagement and SEQ Programs Manager for Reef Check Australia. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Jodi has worked with RCA since joining the team in 2010, has extensive experience as a marine researcher and is responsible for training Reef Check Australia Reef Ambassadors and Scuba divers to search, understand and help spread the love for the little known reefs off our local coastline.
As a global community, we face tremendous challenges in the mission to conserve marine life and habitats. Now is the time for us all to intensify focus on activities that empower people to protect our reefs and oceans.
Since 2001, RCA volunteers have donated more than 75,000 hours to our oceans, collecting data through more than 900 surveys on more than 170 sites along the QLD coast. Such efforts assist with documenting reef health at local, regional and global scales.
But beyond data, we need action. By building connections between citizens, conservation and education, RCA seeks to share findings, inspire action and celebrate all that our oceans have to offer. For this talk, Jodi will showcase the efforts that RCA SEQ citizen scientists have had in collecting reef health data along the Sunshine Coast and wider SEQ region, and share findings about the amazing, yet little known reef structures found at our front doorstep, and the ways that EVERYONE can get involved in better understanding and protecting their local reef resources.
The talk will be held in the Seal Stadium at SEALIFE Mooloolaba, on Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba. Doors open at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start. Stay after the event for a discussion with the presenter and other attendees and enjoy a pizza-rific snack.
