Coast to Coral: Now you see me, now you don't; Seasonality in sea slug distribution

Join Reef Check Australia and friends on the second Tuesday night of each month in your lounge room/office/comfy chair, for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments.

THE SPEAKER:
This month we are hearing from Julie Schubert, an Environmental Scientist, one third of the Nudibranch Domain sea slug survey team, for Reef Check Australia she is a volunteer, survey team leader and SEQ Project Coordinator and a volunteer with Turtle Care Sunshine Coast. Julie has been diving the reefs off the Sunshine Coast since 2006, hunting in rock pools and other marine water bodies recording the abundance and diversity of sea slugs along with the rest of the team from Nudibranch Domain. In 2021 she organised the inaugural Sea Slug Census on the Sunshine Coast, expanding the locations of this international citizen science project
ABOUT THE TALK:
In 2019 Julie decided to undertake an Honours Degree to analyse some of the sea slug (nudibranch) data the team had been collecting over the years. With such a vast amount of data the study was limited to 2 sites, one estuarine and one off-shore. The aim was to assess sea slug rarity and determine if there was clear seasonality to boom and bust appearances of sea slugs.  With such a huge interest in sea slugs worldwide and growing reports of poleward range extensions of many species, this project provides some background on seasonal appearances and just how likely you are to observe some species

Virtual doors (zoom) opens at 6.25pm for a 6:30 pm start.

Stay after the event for networking and nibbles (BYO obviously!) - get your burning questions answered and continue your thoughts, ideas and sea-minded discussions with your local community, all from the comfort of your couch!

Bring a mate and share in the discovery!
