Coast to Coral Gold Coast: Movement patterns of large sharks
The Reef Check Australia Coast to Coral Community Lecture series is now on the Gold Coast! Join us and friends at the Karma Collab Hub Miami for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments. Each month we have a new, interesting and engaging speaker.
This month, our speaker is Marine Ecologist Johan Gustafson from Griffith University. Johan is a marine ecologist at Griffith University focusing on shark ecology. Johan has been working on the movement of multiple shark species including White, Bull, Tiger and Hammerhead sharks; deploying various types of monitoring tags and collecting tissue samples. Johan has been on many international and national television shows including National Geographic and Discovery. Currently Johan is finalising his PhD studies which focused on hammerhead shark ecology in Queensland.
Australian Coastal waters are home to many shark species moving vast distances between coasts and bays. Movement of white sharks is often attributed to whale migrations, whereas bull sharks are said to be everywhere all the time. This presentation outlines the current knowledge of shark movement and the work being undertaken in Queensland on White, Tiger, Bull and Tiger sharks.
