Coast to Coral Brisbane:Volunteer Marine Research in Belize
Join Reef Check Australia and friends at The Bearded Lady for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments.
This month we'll hear from Jodi Burley, a long time volunteer for Australian conservation NGOs.
Jodi will share her international volunteering experience with us, after taking a step outside her comfort zone to experience a foreign culture in the remote area Sarteneja and Bacala Chico Marine Reserve, Belize in Central America.
She will share her experiences and brilliant photos of a section of the reef and coast of Belize only accessible to research scientists. She will also explain the great work NGOs and Belizean governments are doing working together to rebuild depleted fish stocks, save injured manatees, and sustain community wellness and the local economy.
About the speaker:
Jodi works in the compliance sector in environmental and waste management, and sustainability project work. Most recently in volunteering roles she has worked with Dolphin Research Australia, assisting them with dolphin surveys and running school programs on marine mammal education and the impacts like plastic pollution and climate change. She is also an RCA Reef Ambassador. She is passionate about volunteering in a research capacity because the information is critical for the health and survival of marine creatures and the environment.
