Coast to Coral: Fitbits for Sharks; Discovering the behaviours and movements of Port Jackson sharks using biologging tags
Join Reef Check Australia and friends on the second Tuesday night of each month in your lounge room/office/comfy chair, for an evening of discovery, inspiration and appreciation of our local marine, coastal and catchment environments.
This month we will hear from Julianna Kadar, a PhD Candidate at Macquarie University in Sydney with The Fish Lab.
Julianna Kadar has completed a Master of Science in Biodiversity Conservation and a Master of Research in Biology. Julianna believes in the importance of science communication for the benefit of both policy and the public. She is a member of CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools and has been a part of Soapbox Science Sydney, organiser of TEDx Macquarie University, and written for COSMOS Science Magazine. She is also a member of the Homeward Bound Program which is working to build and upskill a network of 1,000 women in STEMM over ten years and will be traveling to Antarctica in 2021 as part of this exciting program.
ABOUT THE TALK:
Julianna works on finding out more about the activity patterns of the Port Jackson shark using shark tags that function like Fitbits - but for sharks. Her study uses machine learning to break down the millions of data points collected by the tags into distinct behaviour signatures like resting, swimming, and feeding. With these behaviour signatures, a clear picture of the Port Jackson shark’s movements can be created and ultimately allow us to ‘see’ what this species is doing underwater, leading to better management of the species and its environment. The Fish Lab that Julianna is a part of also completes studies on shark personality, social networks, cognition, and warming ocean climates.
