Ecoaction - It's the future
Although we do not yet quite have the funding we need to launch this project, it is all ready for initial pilot trials and should prove to be one of our most successful projects, with the right partner.
Something for everyone
The EcoAction program aims to add a new dimension to coral reef tourism in Australia. It will provide opportunities for snorkelers and new scuba divers to become involved in coral reef monitoring activities. It also includes practical educational and skill-building programs for young people. Each product has been designed by Reef Check scientists to give a deeper knowledge and understanding of the coral reef ecosystem.
With a range of interactive educational experiences, the program will empower tourists to collect reef health data and provide the means for future monitoring teams to self finance wherever there are existing hotels and dive shops.
A taste of the survey experience
The key products will include an Underwater Reef Guide, which is a unique underwater book that is like taking your own marine biologist underwater. A Discover Reef Check course helps participants to gain firsthand experience in how Reef Check survey volunteers conduct coral reef research around the world. The course includes a one-hour presentation, followed by a one-hour guided dive where participants can try some of the sampling techniques.
