"As a recreational fisher and diver I really valued the opportunity to see the difference between the fish populations between the "no take" and fishing zones and can understand the impact fishing has on the reef and the health of fishing sites for our future generations. My involvement with Reef Check Australia has made me more carefully consider how my actions can impact upon the environment and has opened an avenue to meet a diverse range of people with a common interest to help sustain our environment." Steve Glasby, Reef Check Australia volunteer
Do you? Enjoy spending time out on the reef?
Are you? Interested in learning more about the fish you see and catch?
Can you? Swim 150m with a snorkel?
If you've answered yes to the questions above, you can join in our Coral Trout Search.
It's a fun and easy way to find out more about how the reef works and its vital relationship with the fish stock enjoyed by so many people, including both commercial and recreational fishermen. With a growing population, more keen fishers take to the water and more fish are being caught. It's our job to find out how we can make sure the coral reefs can sustain enough fish stocks to support this growth.
One way the Government is managing fish stocks is the creation of "no-take" zones where fishing is restricted or banned. These zones are designed to replenish the fished areas and protect fish stock for future generations.
You can help too, in three easy ways:
1. Join our program and help us with our research.
2. Make sure you take only as much fish as you need to make sure the "Blue" (fished) zones stay healthy too!
3. Try to minimise your contribution to CO2 emissions at home and at work to help reduce the threat to fish habitats from climate change.
It's absolutely free to get involved with our Coral Trout Search and there is minimal training involved. You can enjoy the activities while you're out at your favourite fishing or snorkelling spot with friends and family. Just download our monitoring pack or call into our office to find out more.
